Mr. Nariki Kazunari was born in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, in 1931. Around 1960 (35), he began researching and making prototypes of sword mounts, studying under Takahashi Kaishu. He collected iron sand from all over the country and worked to reproduce the elegant iron of these sword mounts by his own tatara iron making process. He has also attempted to revive the yakite fukashi technique of iron-ground surface treatment, developing his own unique world of iron sword mounts. He lives near the Mosan Prefectural Natural Park and is known by the name Mosan.
In 1831, he was certified as an intangible cultural property holder by Nakatsugawa City, and in 1986 he was awarded the Medal with Yellow Ribbon. In 2009, he was certified by the Association for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords as an uninspected master swordsmith.
This work was made in 1976 (Showa 51) at the age of 45, and is modeled after Anchika’s sword mounts (Important Art Object). The iron color is brilliant and the lively chisels of the carved chisels show a powerful dragon leaping out of the waves and rising up from the sea.
