A Menuki as Kwan Yu
A large and marvelous shakudo and gilt menuki formed as a standing Kuan Yu with fierce expression and Chinese halberd in hand. The Chinese general is dressed in intricate, patterned robes of kaga-inlaid gilt, round helmet on his head. On the reverse, a large silver rectangular plaque is incised with the name Suifu in Ibaragi prefecture, the artist’s home base – near Tokyo This striking menuki is in excellent condition; minor wear to the gilt commensurate with age and use. 19th Century, Japan
