Cone-shaped helmet (tsuinari kabuto)
Late Momoyama to early Edo period, 17th century
Iron, lacing, lacquer, shakudō, bronze, gold, fur
27 ½ x 15 ¼ x 12 in. (69.85 x 38.74 x 30.48 cm)
6 lb. (2.72 kg)
The frontal ornament, or maedate, of this helmet is most unusual in that the nine slightly twisted bamboo leaves can spin in a breeze. A crescent moon, trimmed with fur, floats above the rear of the helmet, adding further height and majesty. The stylized cherry-blossom crest on the fukigaeshi, the side flaps of the helmet, was used by several different clans.
