Funada Ikkin Yoshimori, Late Edo, NBTHK

This set is from Darcy Brockbank.

I received this set together with a Tsuba made by same smith on the 9th of Febuary 2022 and on 1st March, I received news that he has passed away.

Darcy will live on in the hearts of many in the Nihonto World.

Funada Ikkin was one of the outstanding students of Goto Ichijo and comes first in his expertise in the art of taka-nikubori(high relief)

Ikkin died at the age of 52 so his works were relatively few compared to the other artisans in the ichijo school.

Ikkin’s works can be found in the prestigious Mitsuma Collections at the Nezu Museum, in the Walter’s Museum, in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and in the Tokyo National Museum.

The Japanese collectors send items to verify the signature and happy to leave it at Hozon paper. Ikkin’s works are quite rare and could easily get Tokubetsu paper if submitted.
