Made by Yokoya Sōmin (横谷宗珉作, よこや そうみん) — Tokubetsu Hozon Koshirae Fitting (Kozuka)

Yokoya Sōmin first studied under the Gotō family and served the shogunate, but later resigned his post, returned to civilian life, and thrived in a world of greater freedom. He established his own school, produced many outstanding craftsmen, and came to be celebrated as the “Founder of Machibori (town-style carving).”

This work depicts a Chinese warrior drawing a bow. The figure is General Yō Yūki (養由基, Yō Yūki) of the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. Yūki was famed as a master archer; it is said that his arrows could pierce seven layers of armor, and from a hundred paces he could hit a willow leaf without fail. Such was his reputation that whenever he appeared at the front lines, enemies believed none would return alive. For this, he was revered as the “Divine Archer General.”

The kozuka presented here is crafted in shibuichi and executed in Sōmin’s original katakiribori technique. It vividly portrays the very moment the arrow is released, rendered across three surfaces with remarkable detail. Sōmin is said to have received guidance in design and composition from the painter Hanabusa Itchō of the Kano school, and this piece is a superb example that demonstrates his exceptional skill and innovative artistic vision.

横谷宗珉ははじめ後藤家の門に学んで幕府の御用を務めていたが、後に禄を辞して野に下り、自由な世界で大いに腕を振るい、一門を形成、名人を多数輩出して「町彫の祖」とまで称される名人となった。
本作は弓を構える中国の武人を描いた図で、春秋時代の楚の武将、養 由基（よう ゆうき）を描いたものである。養由基は弓の名人として知られ、その弓勢の強さは甲冑7枚を貫き、百歩の距離から柳の葉を射て百発百中であったともいう。当時由基が軍前に出れば敵は生きては帰れないと恐れられ神射将軍と呼ばれていたという。掲出の小柄は四分一地に彼の創始である片切彫で今まさに弓を放ったところを三面に渡って見事に描き出している。宗珉は図案・意匠については当時狩野派出身の画家、英一蝶について指導を受けたといわれているが、同工の卓越した技量と斬新な画面構成を示した優品である。
