Made by Yokoya Sōmin
Tokubetsu Hozon Designated Kozuka (Special Preservation Sword Fitting)
Yokoya Sōmin first studied under the Gotō family and served the shogunate, but later resigned from his official post to live freely, where he exercised his skills to the fullest. He established his own school, produced many masters, and became so renowned that he was praised as the “Founder of Machibori (town-style carving).”
This work depicts a Chinese warrior with bow in hand, specifically General Yō Yūki (養由基, Yō Yūki) of the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. Yūki was famous as a master archer, known for the strength of his bow, which was said to pierce seven layers of armor. From a hundred paces he could shoot through a willow leaf with unerring accuracy. It was believed that whenever he appeared at the front, none of the enemy would return alive, and he was feared and revered as the “Divine Archer General.”
The kozuka shown here is made of shibuichi and executed in Sōmin’s original katakiribori technique. It masterfully portrays the instant an arrow is released, expressed across three surfaces with vivid detail. Sōmin is said to have received instruction in design and composition from the Kano-school painter Hanabusa Itchō, and this piece is an excellent example showcasing his outstanding skill and innovative artistic vision.
