Theme Technique
The plate is carved in delicate manner on either sides of the central opening, with a design of WACHI GAI formalised overlapping circles. It is pierced within the rounded rim in YO SUKASHI, positive silhouette, and the KOZUKA HITSU ANA inserted in the design.
COMMENTS
The more rigid design of this work is a reflection of the influence of ZEN ideas, whereas the calm gentleness of this one suggests the teachings of CONFUCIUS.
Since the interlocking rings symbolizes good luck, the guard probably represents a wish for happiness. On the other hand, the rings was also used in japanese family MON; therefore this may merely be an indication of a warrior’s family.
