Kanetsugu (also known as Akamatsu Tarō) was born Kimura Kanesada in 1951 (Showa 26) in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. He began studying under his father, Kaneshige, in 1971 (Showa 46), and obtained official recognition as a swordsmith in 1976 (Showa 51).
This work is a reproduction of the reverse-edged sword wielded by the protagonist of a certain manga. It is constructed with the blade and the spine (back edge) reversed — something long believed to be impossible to create in reality. However, a few such swords are known to exist. The crafting of a reverse-edged sword is extremely difficult, and there are very few swordsmiths capable of making one. Even the polishing process is different from usual, as the yokote line must be cut on the spine side, making it a great challenge.
This particular piece has an excellently made blade, comes with a complete mounting, and is considered a highly valuable example of its kind.
