suba from the Edo period, early 1700s, made in shibuichi with chisel decorations signed Somin of the Yokoya school. Maru gata, kaku mimi, made in shibuichi, depicts a sage, perhaps the Dharma, with the characteristic features of the hand of Somin. Yokoya Somin was the son of Yokoya Soyo, founder of the school and student of Goto Injo. It was Somin who broke with the Goto tradition and brought the ukiyo-e style to the world of kodogu, iebori. Born in Edo in 1670, he is one of the most important figures in the world of the kodogu.
