Tsuba from the Edo period signed Issan Joi with kao
Edo period tsuba made of shibuichi with gold decorations signed 一 蝅 乘 意 Issan Joi with kao. Nade gaku hokei gata with sukidashi mimi is represented Daikoku Ten in a benevolent pose with gold teeth on the omote side while on the ura side two schoolchildren of the Chinese tradition. Below the signature is the nagaharu seal in gold. Issan Joi is one of the three greats of the Nara tradition and his works are exhibited in museums around the world. He was a student of Nara Toshinaga and this tsuba represents his highest level of expression for which the school is famous. In this case there is also the gold kao engraved by Joi himself, confirming one of his most successful works.
