Tsuba with Fukurokuju, Narashika and Tsuru
by Yokoya Soyo 横谷宗興 ca. 1750
3rd generation Yokoya, 2nd generation Soyo
Soyo was the pupil of the famous Yokoya Somin. He worked in the mid Edo period until his death in 1779. It is important to understand that the Yokoya school was really at the beginning of the Machibori schools and influenced most of the Masters to come after them. Soyo was especially well known for his Katakiribori technique which can be seen here. The use of thick and fine chisels resembles brush painting and creates a dynamic and three dimensional feeling.
